Who Can Join Army Cadets?
Any Canadian citizen or landed Immigrant can join as early as 12 years of age, and can remain until they turn 19, the age at which they must retire.
How Much Is It Going To Cost Me?
Nothing.
Army Cadets are sponsored by the Department of National Defence and The Army Cadet League of Canada. Many Cadet Corps also have other sponsors such as Royal Canadian Legions, local Regiments etc.
The Canadian Forces provides uniforms, training facilities and instructors, and thus, Army Cadets is FREE program for youth. The Cadet Corps Support Committee fundraises for items not covered by DND, such as tents, camping stoves, lanterns, marksmanship supplies, band equipment and uniforms etc.
Who Teaches Army Cadets?
Cadets are supervised by members of the CAF in the Cadet Organizations and Administration Training Service (COATS) most of whom are among the 7,500 members of the Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC), a branch within the Reserve Force of the Canadian Armed Forces. There are also Civilian Instructors, many of whom were past CIC Officers or past Cadets. Everyone who has direct contact with the Cadets have been thoroughly screened.
Are There Summer Camps?
Summer courses are a very big part of Army Cadets, and are run every year in July and August. There are many different courses ranging from 2 to 7 weeks. Cadets are not required to attend the courses. You can take everything from General Training, Expedition instructor and leadership courses to advanced expedition and the Military Para Course and parachute to the ground and make great friends from all over Canada in the process or travel over seas!
As with the rest of Army Cadets, summer courses are free, and each cadet is actually paid a weekly training allowance. Eventually an experienced cadet can apply for staff positions for summer courses, and get pay equivalent to a full-time summer job.
Do I Have To Join the Military?
Army Cadets are not members of the Canadian Forces, nor will they ever be asked to join. If you choose to join though, you will have a great advantage over other applicants (some high-ranking officers in the Canadian forces started off in the cadet program). However, you will never be required to serve with the military.
